Many ideas die in corporate meetings. Some even don’t reach to the meeting room. It’s usual. Nothing is wrong in that. However, what is painful is to see them die slow death due to organizational rigmarole. You ‘feel’ for those ideas which were not flawed, but because they got crushed under the weight of endless alignment. Be it zebra-crossing of steering committee, U-turn at stakeholders sign-off stage, and potholes of risk assessment, organization can save its resources, employees’ motivations, and systemic energy by identifying the early signs of hurdles.
Sign 1: Exploding Stakeholder Lists:
A simple regular update requires feedback from dozen stakeholders and half-dozen departments with no direct or indirect involvement?
If ownership spreads across too many people, accountability vanishes and decisions stall.
Sign 2: Requests for Exhaustive Proof Before Testing Simple Things
If you are demanded to prove multi-page forecast, long risk matrix, or cross-functional impacts for a zero-budget pilot, then ask this question whether bureaucracy is taking over.
When efforts to test pilot is lesser than the effort to get alignment, progress grinds to a staggering halt.
When you see such early signs, don’t lose hope. There are ways to handle it. Read my article - 7 Tactics to Stay Fast and YET Stay Aligned in Bureaucratic Organization - in Insights section to learn tactical strategies to maneuver through corporate delays.
